The standard set by the American Kennel Club calls for them to be "merry" and
they certainly are.
Cocker Spaniels are the smallest of the Sporting Breed and were
originally bred to hunt birds. They have a keen sense of smell which enables them to
flush out game birds or find that ball you just lost in the weeds. Cockers are very
intelligent and do well in conformation, agility or rally competition as well as hunting
and field trials. They have long coats that do need regular brushing and  grooming.
Visit my
Special Information page to learn more about their care. They have very
sweet dispositions and love to please you.  Best of all they are very affectionate and
fit in your lap!

The Cocker Spaniel has a long history of being a favorite breed in the U.S.A but in
the years from the 1940s through the 1970s they were over bred by indiscriminate
breeders who bred for quantity not quality. This caused the development of some
bad temperaments and more eye and hip problems.  In the years since, reputable
breeders have been able to improve the quality and restore the loving and sweet
temperaments for which Cockers were known.  The same type of indiscriminate
breeding occurred with Dalmatians after the movie,
101 Dalmatians, came out and
again with the popularity of Chihuahuas after Taco Bell used one in its advertising.

Whatever type of dog you decide to add to your family, I urge you to research the
breed thoroughly, especially if is a breed that has become popular due to a movie or
TV show. Learn about their qualities and  genetic predispositions before you decide
which breed will fit the best into your family.  You can click on the
AKC button which
will take you to the American Kennel Club for further information.
