GROOMING

Nothing is more beautiful than a Cocker Spaniel in full show coat!  You
can see examples of this on the
Our Dogs page.  Cocker Spaniels have
long coats that need regular bathing, combing and clipping. Learning to
groom your dog is a rewarding experience and can save you money in
the long run but many owners take their pet to a professional groomer.
When a Cocker is not perfoming in the show ring, most owners find it
easier to care for their coat if it is trimmed in a shorter "pet clip". In
between visits to the groomer though, a Cocker needs regular brushing
to prevent the coat from matting and to remove dirt and debris picked up
outside.  They should see a groomer about every 6 - 8 weeks depending
on the growth of their coat. Keeping your Cocker groomed and bathed
will also keep them healthier.

EAR CARE

For optimum health, a Cocker Spaniel's ears need to be kept clean
so that infection doesn't set in. Using the following formula for
Blue
Power Treatment
will keep your dog's ears clean and healthy.
Since I learned of this cleaning method my dogs rarely ever have
any kind of ear problem.  I use it before their bath then bathe the
outside of the ear as you would the rest of the dog. All ingredients
are easily found at your local pharmacy, Wal-Mart or Target. Just
ask the pharmacist since they are often kept behind the counter
even though a prescription is not needed.

Blue Power Ear Treatment

The ears are very sensitive, so to avoid the "shock" of a cold
solution, your dog will appreciate having it warmed up a bit. Rather
than using a microwave, I've found that the best way to warm up a
solution is to place it in a cup or glass of very warm water (as a
‘bath’) for about a half hour or so.

Ingredients:

16 oz bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol or Witch Hazel)
4 tbls Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution

Mix all ingredients in the Alcohol Bottle and shake.  (Make sure you
shake before every application.)

Treatment:
Fill ear with solution and massage gently for 30 seconds and wipe
with a tissue.  Fill a second time and just wipe without massaging.
The dog will shake the excess out.  I use an eye dropper to fill the
ear. I use this to
prevent infections but if your dog has already
developed one use the following directions.

Directions:
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks.
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks.
1 time per month thereafter.

Don't worry about it staining because it will rinse out with soap and
water. I've used this on my dogs for many years every time they go
into the tub and it REALLY works!
